Family-Friendly Concierge Beekeeping Services in the DMV
We manage backyard beehives for families and bring honeybee education to schools and camps. Serving DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
Backyard Beekeeping, Made Simple
Our concierge beekeeping service installs and maintains your hive so it stays healthy and productive. Want the honey harvest without the work? We’ll handle everything for you. Curious to learn? The whole family can join and practice the art of ethical beekeeping alongside us. Either way, you’ll enjoy your own fresh honey while renewing your garden and supporting pollinators and the planet.
We believe sharing the joy of honeybees with children today prepares them to steward our planet tomorrow. We offer school visits that teach about honeybees and pollinators, and we collaborate on hands-on projects that help children contextualize the importance of pollinators in their community. Together, let’s inspire the next generation to care for our environment!

FAQ
Commonly asked questions about starting your own hive or having an educational program about bees, plus more!
Yes! Backyard beekeeping is legal across the DMV, though local ordinances vary by city and county. Some areas have specific requirements around hive placement and the number of hives allowed. At Homegrown Hives, we take your local guidance into consideration and make sure you are set up the right way from day one.
Less than you might think! A single beehive has roughly the footprint of a small filing cabinet. Most standard suburban backyards have plenty of room. During your initial home consultation, our beekeeper will assess your outdoor space and identify the ideal placement for your hive (factoring in sun exposure, water access, and neighbor considerations) so you feel confident before a single bee arrives.
Absolutely - and that's exactly what we're built for. Homegrown Hives was founded with families in mind, and our hive coaching service offers developmentally-appropriate, hands-on instruction for every age. Our beekeeper has a master's degree in early childhood education and years of classroom experience, so working safely and comfortably with children is second nature. Many of our youngest participants walk away as the biggest bee enthusiasts in the family!
We serve individuals, families, schools, and organizations across the DMV - including Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Reston, Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Washington DC. Not sure if we cover your area? Reach out and we'll let you know. We're always looking to grow our service area as demand increases.
None at all - that's the whole idea behind concierge beekeeping. We bring everything your hive needs, from the equipment to the bees themselves. No prior experience is necessary. Whether you want us to handle everything hands-off or learn alongside our beekeeper, we meet you exactly where you are. Our service is specifically designed to make beekeeping accessible for complete beginners, including families with young children.
Our Hive Tending service starts at $216.75/month for one hive, and our Hive Coaching service — which includes hands-on beekeeping lessons for your whole family — starts at $308.25/month. Both services include everything you need to get started: full hive setup, a high-quality nucleus colony of bees, monthly hive health reports, and fresh honey. Annual plans are available at a 10% discount. The best way to find the right fit for your family is to book a free home consultation and we'll build a plan around your goals and budget.
Your bees don't disappear in winter; they cluster together inside the hive to stay warm and live off their honey stores. Our beekeeper continues to visit about once a month through the colder months to monitor hive health and make sure your colony has everything it needs to survive the winter and emerge strong in spring. Winter care is included in your service, so your hive is in good hands year-round.
Spring is the ideal time to start a new hive, typically between April and June when flowers are blooming and nectar is abundant. This gives your colony the best chance to establish itself, build up honey stores, and thrive through their first season. We're currently booking consultations for Spring 2026 - and spots fill up quickly, so we recommend reaching out early to secure yours!
